Version 2.0

east-tec Eraser Version 2.0 was released on May 12, 1999.

  • New feature: Erase for Good This powerful feature has the purpose to destroy any data from previously deleted files that may still be accessible on your disk. In previous versions this was accomplished by using two different erasing capabilities of Eraser: wiping the disk free space and wiping the files slack. In version 2.0 these two capabilities merged to create the Erase for Good feature, which was also added the ability to destroy the contents of the Recycle Bin beyond recovery.
  • New feature: The Sensitive Data Cleaner The Sensitive Data Cleaner clears the contents of folders that usually contain sensitive data. This feature will allow you to quickly get rid of your Web browser cache (or Temporary Internet files), cookies, history, the recent document list, etc. And because the Sensitive Data Cleaner uses the wiping capabilities of Eraser, you will get rid of that sensitive data for good.
  • New wipe methods east-tec Eraser now comes with two new highly secure wipe methods:
  • 3+7+3 Beyond DoD Standards: A secure (but slower) 13 pass wipe method, exceeding the U.S. Department of Defence (DoD) standards. The first 3 passes are with random patterns, the next 7 passes are the standard passes from the DoD standard and the last 3 passes are with random patterns. The last pass is checked.
  • Stop Hardware Recovery (Gutmann): A highly secure (but slow) 35-pass wipe method, based on Peter Gutmann's paper Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory. The method is designed to erase data regardless of the disk raw encoding. It effectively removes the magnetic remnants from disk, preventing hardware recovery tools from restoring any data.
  • With these two new wipe methods (and especially with the second), east-tec Eraser is now ready to stop even the most advanced hardware recovery tools.
  • File name deletion in Windows 98 and 95 Eraser is now able to completely destroy the names of files that are erased in Windows 98 and 95 (on FAT drives: FAT12, FAT16 or FAT32)
  • Improved Windows Shell (Explorer) Integration via context menus (a new command, Erase beyond recovery, to the context menu of any file or folder; a new command, Wipe deleted data, to the context menu of drives; a new command, Erase beyond recovery, to the context menu of the Recycle Bin). east-tec Eraser is also available in the Send To menu. A shortcut to east-tec Eraser is also available on desktop for erasing via drag and drop. You can set the Eraser shell integration options directly from Eraser.
  • Improved wipe method handling The dialog box that allows you to manage the wipe methods was completely redesigned. For each wipe method you may now see a detailed description, the security level (Low, Normal or High), whether the wipe method can stop software or hardware recovery tools and whether it can be used to wipe compressed drives.
  • Improved command-line support, new command-line parameters
